Iditarod Marker in Seward

At one time the Iditarod started here.  998 miles Seward to Nome.  There were many memorial plaques, benches, markers around this area which is now a walking trail in the city. The Iditarod begins in Anchorage now but still finishes in Nome, with the race starting the first Saturday in March each year.

Moose Pass (pop. 61) and our luxury cabin

Moose Pass Alaska!  We're here for our last 4 nights.  Lots of sea planes in and out on the lake right across the road from our cabin.  Very quiet and secluded little town halfway between Seward and Hope.  We're heading back into Seward today for Alaska Sea Life Center Tour, civilizatin, shopping and dinner in town!  Heading back to Ohio late tomorrow....Can't believe how FAST these 2 weeks have gone and how much we've seen and done, but when you look at the map, we've only seen a thumbnail of Alaska.  We WILL be back....  more later........

Kayaking Day 10

Our 1/2 day kayaking trip and the Lyrica Saillboat that brought us back to Seward.  Perfectly calm day on the Prince William Sound actually Resurection Bay, great for kayaking, not so great for sailing.

Its Alaskan custom o remove your shoes at the door. How many people are staying at this cabin?

Small bear footprint in mud on trail

Not the best photo just a quick one taken with my phone, but it is a bear print (small bear) we saw on our hike a little bit ago.  We saw several other bear prints, some moose prints, bear scat, and maybe some wolf/lg dog?? prints along this trail.

Valdez con't Day 8

A Pacific Dolphin, Eagle on an iceburg, humpback whale's hump and tail fluke...some of the wildlife we saw yesterday. (click on any of the images to enlarge)

Valdez Stan Stephens 9 hr boat tour of Prince William Sound Day 8

Our ship for the day.....served us lunch and light supper.  Sea Lions on the no. 9 buoy and the massive, very impressive Mearss Glacier....400' high 1/2 mile long.  We sat for about an hr....less than 1/4 mi away and watched the glacier calve...... chunks of ice would crack, break off and fall into the bay.. the resulting waves woul flip over the floating iceburgs already floating in the bay around us.. AMAZING!

Day 6 con't. Kennicott Copper Mill

The 14 story copper mill that the towns of Kennicott and McCarthy were built around.  We toured the abandoned mill and some of the remaining Kennicott Mining Company's buildings that were still standing.  So very interesting...such history from 1911, unbelievable what those people back then did in the conditions of Alaska.  Trying to catch up on the blog while we have internet.  Leaving here (Valdez) in 8 hours for the very small remote town of Moose Pass.  Went on a 9 hr Prince William Sound boat tour today, saw tons of Bald Eagles, sea otters, sea lions, Pacific Porpoises, Puffins and 2HUMPBACK WHALES!!  Will try to get photos down loaded and a few up before we leave in the morning........

Root Glacier Climb Thurs Day 6 con't

A large moulon, the brothers and wives at the turn around point on Root Glacier and lunch on the glacier.
